Senior Sunday Sermon Messages

On June 1st, our high school seniors led us in worship and shared a special message about the importance of maintaining Christian community. Many have asked for written copies of the full message, click the button below to download. Please enjoy the following excerpts:
Kaitlyn Fankboner
Hoggard High School, Class of 2025

"Admitting that we need help can often make us feel like failures.
But needing help doesn't make us weak, it is what makes us human."
But needing help doesn't make us weak, it is what makes us human."
Abigail Holder
Hoggard High School, Class of 2025

"Being vulnerable isn't easy, but it's what God wants us to do. In society, vulnerability is seen as a weakness, but it's the opposite. Vulnerability leads us to a deeper connection with each other, which leads to a greater sense of belonging."
Madison Fankboner
Hoggard High School, Class of 2025

"Comparison makes you forget who you are and who God has called you to be.
When you live in comparison, you're constantly looking sideways instead of upward. You're measuring your worth by someone else's journey, someone else's gift, someone else's timeline. But God never called you to their race—He called you to yours."

Summer Cooks Needed for DVSS Casseroles
by Carol Query

With the summer months upon us, our friends at the Domestic Violence Shelter continue to need the casseroles we have prepared for them so far in 2025. Those enjoying the casseroles are often mothers with young children. Therefore, the casseroles need to be child-friendly, not a dish that Emeril might have prepared with lots of ingredients and spices.
If you would like to prepare a casserole, please go to the mail room near the dining room to get a 13 x 9 aluminum pan and lid from the cabinet next to the freezer. Take it home, prepare a casserole in it with directions for heating on the outside, and then on Sunday place the casserole in the freezer where I will get it and take it to DVSS.
For additional information, call or text Carol Query at 910-470-3127 or click the link below to send an email.
Current available dates:
JULY 6, 13, 20, & 27.
AUGUST 3, 10, 17, 24, & 31.
SEPTEMBER 7, 14, 21, & 28.
THANK-YOU so much for considering my invitation for your participation in a most beneficial Go and Serve project.

AC Weather is Here
by Earth Care Education

It’s likely that all who live in eastern NC would agree that air conditioning is a wonderful invention. The fact that it is responsible for about 17% of a home’s electric consumption is simply an accepted expense. The U.S. Energy Information Admin. offers further statistics that show that the average utility bill can jump by 8% between June and September, and that 3% of all global emissions are rooted to air conditioning, more than that of the airline industry. Fortunately, there are tried and true ways to help us dial down the thermostat a few degrees and still have our homes feel comfortably cool. You probably know some.
Covering or closing curtains or shades is an easy way to make a noticeably cooler room. The Attachments Energy Rating Council suggest these additional choices: black out curtains, cellular shades (these can reduce about 60% of the sun’s heat entering your windows), or peel-and-stick solar film, which blocks around 78% of the sun’s warmth.
As expected, keeping the air moving greatly improves comfort. The U.S. Dept. of Energy reports that using ceiling fans allows one to comfortably raise the thermostat setting about 4 degrees F. (Be sure the fan turns counterclockwise in the summer.). On a bigger scale, using a whole house fan can cool your home and use as little as as 10% of the electricity as an air conditioner. Be sure, though, the outside humidity is low before turning on the fan or your home will become too humid and ripe for mildew.
Since humidity makes us feel warmer, a dehumidifier is a good option to cool down an area. The bathroom exhaust fan gives us the same advantage in clearing out humidity. Other heat tackling habits include being mindful to use big heat generating appliances, such as ovens and dishwashers, during cooler hours of the day. You may even want to substitute smaller appliances such as toaster ovens and air fryers to reduce the heat. Finally, subduing “vampire power” use results in reducing needless carbon emissions. This refers to those devices that pull electricity even if they aren’t being used, they’re on standby, such as home entertainment systems. They leech heat into your homes and drive up electric bills. One way to reduce this is by setting up central stations with multiple USB plugs. This makes the unplugging easier. Using power stripes to control multiple devices also works.
These are not difficult energy reducing tips, and as you “roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer”, remember there are many ways to stay cool and be good stewards of God’s creation.
Heaven is yours, the earth also; you made the world and everything in it.
Psalms 89:11

Living Faith Rm 214
Beginning July 2nd, join us every Wednesday from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm for a 6-weeks book study in the Living Faith classroom as we talk about Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde's book, "How We Learn to be Brave." The book focuses on key moments in life that shape the path we follow, such as Deciding to Go, Deciding to Stay, Deciding to Start.
Rev. Budde is the Episcopal bishop of Washington, D. C., and she tells stories from her own life as well as stories from the lives of many others, from public figures to personal acquaintances.
Our discussion will be informal with various leaders. Readers will need to acquire their own copy of the book, and should come to the first meeting having read the first chapter. We will set up a zoom link for those wishing to join that way.
Please contact Sue McCaffray if you wish to zoom, or with questions.

The Carousel Center

Our June collection of items for local ministries will be for our neighbor, The Carousel Center. The Center provides a "one-stop shop" of services for children who have suffered abuse. Everything from intakes, interviews with law enforcement, medical examinations, and counseling is available under one roof, thus limiting the trauma retelling their story causes. We'll be collecting the following items:
Please drop them in the bin in the 15th Street lobby. Thank you for caring for these children.
- Small bottles of water
- Individual serving size microwavable soups and mac and cheese
- Single serving snacks (Cheez-Its, popcorn, pretzels, and chips are favorites)
- Juicy Juice boxes
