Summer Reading Club Update
by Sue McCaffray

Beginning July 2nd, join us every Wednesday from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm for a 6-weeks book study in the Living Faith classroom as we talk about Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde's book, "How We Learn to be Brave." The book focuses on key moments in life that shape the path we follow, such as Deciding to Go, Deciding to Stay, Deciding to Start.
Rev. Budde is the Episcopal bishop of Washington, D. C., and she tells stories from her own life as well as stories from the lives of many others, from public figures to personal acquaintances.
Our discussion will be informal with various leaders. Readers will need to acquire their own copy of the book, and should come to the first meeting having read the first chapter. We will set up a zoom link for those wishing to join that way.
Please contact Sue McCaffray if you wish to zoom, or with questions.

Earth Care Corner
Bees + Native Plants = Winners For All
by Earth Care Education

"I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine."
Psalm 50:11
Psalm 50:11
It’s well past the time since we’ve known that our bee populations are suffering and declining at alarming rates. We should also know that without these pollinators our food supplies will decline as well, since they pollinate about 85% of our food crops.
Thankfully, we are a people of hope and action. With that in mind, consider adding one or more of the following actions to your life and be a part of the solution in helping our vital pollinators.
The first action is so easy: buy local honey. The honey making beekeepers are experts in maintaining healthy bee populations. Plus, buying their honey enriches our local area and economy. A good place to find this local honey is at farmers’ markets.
Secondly, if you have the space, planting a bee friendly tree is a good option. Eastern redbuds, red maples, black cherry, and serviceberry trees are some that are native to eastern NC.
Most of us usually think of flowers for sustaining the bees. You don’t necessarily have to have a yard either, as many varieties work well in pots on balconies or in window boxes. According to the Xerces Society, some bee friendly flowers that are native in our area are asters, Black-eyed Susans, blazing star, sweet goldenrod, huckleberry shrub (an evergreen), Joe Pye weed, penstemon, purple coneflowers, and woodland sunflowers.
Sadly, one of the biggest threats to bees are neonics or neonicotinords. These are a class of synthetic insecticides and herbicides that are widely used to treat seeds as well as plants. Bees cannot survive them. If you must use such chemicals, try to limit their use when plants are in bloom and bees are foraging. A healthier way for bees, and people, is to use compost or organic fertilizer.
Finally, adding a bee bath and/or bee house to your yard does help the bees. If you choose a bee bath, using a mosquito dunk in the water would be a good way to keep the pesky mosquitos away.
Trying one or more of these suggestions will help our bee populations, and you may have your own suggestions to share with others. Thanks for reading and acting.

Support Families in May

We are collecting various items in May for Family Promise, a ministry we have supported for many years. It's always a privilege to share that time with these families.
This month we'll also be providing the following items:

Our June collection of items for local ministries will be for our neighbor, The Carousel Center. The Center provides a "one-stop shop" of services for children who have suffered abuse. Everything from intakes, interviews with law enforcement, medical examinations, and counseling is available under one roof, thus limiting the trauma retelling their story causes. We'll be collecting the following items:
Please drop them in the bin in the 15th Street lobby. Thank you for caring for these children.
- Small bottles of water
- Individual serving size microwavable soups and mac and cheese
- Single serving snacks (Cheez-Its, popcorn, pretzels, and chips are favorites)
- Juicy Juice boxes
